I was born in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. My formal education began with elementary school and continued through university. In 1983, I received a bachelor’s degree in science from the Polytechnic Institute and secured an engineering position with a local research facility. In 1989, however, life in the former Soviet Union became unbearable, and my family and I immigrated to the United States. Upon my arrival in America, I didn’t speak any English; hence, my American career started with learning a foreign language. Within the first nine (9) months, I was accepted to ITT Technical Institute. After graduating from ITT Tech, I was accepted to the University of Utah with majors in Pre-Med and Psychology, and a minor in Sociology. In 1997,
